A keyboard-style scanner sends a code to the active field, where DRX tries to match a product. Nothing makes a cashier feel more like a retail wizard than that satisfying BEEP when a product jumps straight into the cart. DRX supports standard USB and Bluetooth handheld barcode scanners across all your hardware setups. Here is how to plug them in, test them, and keep your checkout line humming.

How barcode scanners work with DRX

Almost all commercial barcode scanners act as HID Keyboard Emulators—meaning as far as your computer or tablet knows, the scanner is just an Olympic-speed typist that punches in the barcode numbers and taps Enter in a millisecond!

On Desktop Web (Browser)

  1. Plug your USB barcode gun into your computer or connect your Bluetooth scanner via your operating system settings.
  2. In DRX, open New sale.
  3. Click into the Scan SKU / barcode or search products input box at the top of the screen.
  4. Scan a barcode on any product in your inventory:
    • The scanner will type the code and trigger search immediately.
    • If the SKU matches, the item drops directly into your cart!
  5. Scan the barcode a second time to bump the quantity up to 2.

On iPhone (Native iOS App)

  1. Turn on your Bluetooth barcode scanner in pairing mode.
  2. Open iOS Settings > Bluetooth and connect to your scanner.
  3. Open the DRX app and tap the POS tab.
  4. Tap the search bar and scan any item—the product pops into your cart with instant haptic feedback.
  5. No hardware scanner? Tap the Camera Scanner icon in the search bar to use your iPhone’s built-in camera to scan barcodes and QR codes on the fly!

On Android & Mobile Web

  1. Pair your Bluetooth scanner through your Android device settings.
  2. Open the Register tab in DRX.
  3. Tap the product search bar and pull the trigger on your scanner. The matching item drops straight into your bottom cart.

Troubleshooting scanner quirks

  • No characters appear when you scan: Make sure your cursor is focused in the search/SKU input box! A scanner types wherever your cursor is active.
  • Wrong characters or numbers appear: Check your scanner’s user manual and scan the configuration barcode labeled Set to Standard US Keyboard Layout.
  • Code types out but doesn’t add to cart: Most scanners have a setting that controls whether they send an automatic Enter key (carriage return) after scanning. Scan the configuration barcode in your scanner manual labeled Add Enter Suffix so DRX knows you finished scanning.
  • Barcode isn’t recognized: Head over to Products, find the item, click Edit, and verify that the barcode printed on the package matches the SKU / Barcode field on the product card.
